Long live aphids!

For many years Star Quality has been propagating perennials with nature’s help and minimum control of pests and diseases. This is important for maintaining the ecosystem. Insects feed themselves, but they are also feed for other animals.  So chemical control does not only affect the pests, but also their natural predators later in the season.

Aphids are actually very beneficial!

“In spring, ladybirds and their larvae like to feed on young aphids, and so do the larvae of hoverflies and lacewing flies. On top of this, a broad range of ichneumonidae lay their eggs in aphids. Within 24 hours an ichneumon wasp will then emerge from each aphid, which will in turn lay 300 eggs in 300 different aphids. And after some time the aphids will disappear, killed by natural enemies that have been able to multiply partly thanks to the very pest itself. When there are no more aphids available the predators will go in search of different food such as red spider mites and thrips.” So if you kill aphids when they first appear you’ll end up having no natural pest controllers at your nursery later in the season.

Important to inform consumers

Consumers should be more aware of the benefits of aphids and other insects such as ichneumon wasps. Organically propagated plants will be better able to resist natural enemies in consumers’ gardens. The plants will grow stronger, having survived pests - in other words, a win-win situation for environmentally conscious consumers.

An important task for garden centres

Garden centres should explain to their employees that aphids are at the beginning of an important ecosystem and should certainly not be controlled. They should also inform consumers of the importance of ensuring diversity in their gardens with insect hotels, birdhouses and flowering plants that produce pollen. They will all help to prevent pests by enabling natural pest controllers to do their work.
